March 21, 2015 BILLABONG presented PARK QUEEN, a girls only ski & snowboard event, at Ski Wentworth, Nova Scotia. This is always an INCREDIBLE event and a fun way to end the season - SUN, warmer temperatures, a full park and PIZZA. You couldn't ask for anything else!
We missed a few of our regular competitors due to March Break but we were SO excited to have 15 female participants and 6 female coaches out on the snow all day. MANY of these ladies were there to experience their first ever freestyle clinic and contest, awesome! The morning started out with the coaches and participants spreading into 3 groups and spending time of all of the features in the park learning how to approach them and then how to do a variety of new tricks! Many of our ski group landed their first 180 during the clinic and the snowboard group learned back 3's and a ton on the boxes. At lunch, Billabong presented our fantastic pizza party! Wentworth pizza, cookies and a large drink selection lead to full bellies and a ton of smiles and laughes at lunch. The afternoon contest warmed up quickly, the group had incredible energy which was supported by a large group of spectators (fans!) and encouraged by our phenomenal announcers, Christina Retson & Oceanne Fillon (both were 2015 Canada Winter Games athletes!). Thanks to Christina and Oceanne for keeping the music bumping and all of us laughing through the entire afternoon. A HUGE THANK YOU to our amazing sponsors as none of this would be possible without them! Our contest winners left with Billabong winter jackets along with a ton of other prizes and everyone left the event with something ALONG with the awesome check-in bags! There's never a better way to spend Valentine's Day - a perfect park, sunny day, great conditions and a park full of 17 RAD riders pushing their limits. Park Days @ Martock started with the group spreading out and working on improving their park skills with the help of 6 female snowboard & ski coaches. The level of riding this year was the highest we've ever seen!!! There was a 45 year age difference between our youngest and oldest riders and smiles on everyone's face. We were excited to see a large group of new riders coming out, all ages 9-11, demonstrating that the future of female freestyle riding in Nova Scotia is strong and growing. The afternoon contest was high energy and included lots of great dancing. Thanks to coaches Christina Retson & Livy Fraser for putting together a fantastic playlist. Competitors started dropping into the competition course slowly but as soon as the 25 minute remaining announcement was made, the real show started! The judges couldn't believe the progression during the contest including Cameron who went home with the Best Trick of the day for a 50-50 front 360 off the culvert! Thanks to all who participated and congrats to our podium winners: Snowboard Beginner

Ladies took over Wentworth’s Orchard Park with 30 females ranging from age 5 to over 30 participating. There was even an awesome group of ladies who drove over 6 hours from Cape Breton to attend the event! The morning clinic had two-time snowboard Olympian Sarah Conrad as well as World Championship medalist Freestyle skier Meredith Gardner giving tips along with four (4) other female coaches! The whole group continued to progress their riding throughout the morning while dancing to the playlist between runs. Lunch was a huge Billabong Pizza Party, thanks to Billabong for keeping everyone well fed! As the group went back out to compete in the afternoon, we’d discovered it had started snowing hard, which meant fresh powder for the contest, fun! Everyone threw down in the afternoon contest and we saw a ton of tricks we hadn’t in the morning, including 270 on the boxes from both the Advanced Ski and Snowboard category participants. By the end of the day, everyone left with a bag of prizes with some leaving as Park Queen crown holders. Here’s the final results: Beginner Ski: 1st - Marine R. 2nd – Caelan S. 3rd - Bella C. I'm not sure about everyone else, but this winter has snuck up on me just like those extra pounds you gain from lots of turkey and sweets do after Christmas. I hope that everyone is ready for an awesome winter! Roast Beef Rail Jam at Crabbe, NB last weekend looked awesome, I hope some girls attended this year! You may have noticed that we have decided to downsize the FEAST tour this winter, having 3 stops instead of 5, This is in hopes to have larger turnouts at fewer stops instead of only a few girls at each one! So girls, make sure you come out to have a blast and meet people from different hills around Atlantic Canada! Here's this winters dates:Feb 10, 2013 - CRABBE, NB (includes free BBQ lunch) Feb 17, 2013 - MARTOCK, NS (includes free BBQ lunch) Feb 24, 2013 - BROOKVALE, PEI Online registration is up for the Crabbe and Martock events, click on the FEAST 2013 link at the top for more information! I have to run, I'll be in touch soon ;) peace, love, shred - - Sarah p.s. for some comedic relief, watch this: http://vimeo.com/33329565 Even though we were for forecasted for 20mm of rain (or more), 11 girls still ventured out to Martock for the 3rd stop of Rugged Riders Kinky Rail Jam! This shows true dedication in the hearts of the Scotia shred girls. We had mini shreds as young as 6 to ladies in their late 20s come out for the day.
The day started off slow, you could tell the rain was getting some people down. The music was off from the mass amounts of rain getting into the amp and the skies were grey. However, once the ladies started hitting the features and learning new tricks their eyes brightened and you could see the stoke meter rising. The boys who were there to help me with all the tech stuff and judge were a main reason for this; girls young or old always love when boys are getting stoked on their riding. I think by the end of the day they had more fun than everyone else and let me tell you… we had A LOT of fun! Before we knew it the clinic was over and the game of SPY began. Kate, who is only 9 years old, took home the swag. She only got one letter! We took a short break and decided to change the layout of the event a bit (oh! And the music started working again!). With only 10 girls riding in the competition, it still pouring out and everyone soaked we decided to do one 45 minute jam instead of three separate half hour ones. This worked out wonderfully, the more advanced riders got the beginners and intermediate riders stoked on hitting the larger features! This led to all of the intermediate riders attempting to hit the kink rail! The advanced riders killed it all day, we saw front boards, 270s… you name it, they tried it. We saw huge progression within the beginners, with most of the trying front boards by the end of the day! Placing’s went like this: ADVANCED: 1st Nikki Meyer 2nd Mary Ann Kavanagh 3rd Charlotte Butcher INTERMEDIATE: 1st Julie Smith 2nd Anna Dwyer 3rd Chantal Brunette BEGINNER: 1st Isabelle Allen 2nd Ella Lentz 3rd Kate Mackinnon Game of Spy - Kate Mackinnon Most Rugged Bail– Mary Ann Kavanagh (she smashed her face on the kink rail, rugged!) "Tits Deep" Best Trick – Nikki Meyer (50-50 to tailslide, 270 out on the kink!) |
